John Casimir and John Ernest (or Johann Casimir and Johann Ernest, if you want to be more German about it) were two dukes of the area in Germany known as Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. In fact, these two handsome devils were brothers! They are most celebrated for bringing a period of prosperity to the region which included the design and construction of many renaissance buildings still standing today. This coin was minted just before the split of the principality by both brothers in 1596, to set up separate dominions under the Holy Roman Empire. So important are these two brothers in German history, that another taler coin featuring both sits today in the MET museum in New York City!
