Here’s something to get excited about. This is a 2 Escudos from Colombia. It is also known as a gold cob. After the Spanish conquered much of what is today Latin America, they made these crude coins to facilitate the easy movement of money back across the Atlantic. Unfortunately (or fortunate for us), a massive ship went down off the coast of Florida in 1715, which is where many of these coins come from today. This cob was produced during the reign of Philip IV (we can tell based on the style of shield (on obverse) and cross (on reverse). The date is a period (1628-1700) because the actual date did not make it onto the coin during the crude production process (some have full or partial dates and are typically worth a lot more). The mint location was Nuevo Reino (or Bogota today). The mint mark and assayers mark are also typically found on the cob depending on the orientation and completeness of the strike. That all being said, I absolutely love the eye appeal of this coin, and I think the reverse is stunning!!
