The 1859-S is one of the key dates of the Liberty Seated Dollar series. With a mintage of only 20,000 pieces this issue at San Francisco was minted almost expressly for entry into the Orient for foreign trade. Very few were preserved and not even the mint cabinet received one for their collection. The few mint state example always command a large premium when they come to auction. This piece was owned by famous collector D.L. Hansen.
