484,000 of these "VDB" varieties were produced in San Francisco which says a lot about the number of wheat cent collectors in the world today. The "low" mintage created an instant scarcity at the time and were actively sought after for their interesting story and low availability. Apparently the designer (Victor David Brenner) originally had his name engraved on the bottom of the reverse, but that was changed to simply "V.D.B." instead. The tradition of a designer including their initials (or name) on a coin had a long precedent. Regardless, people did not like the free self-promotion of VDB and it was quickly adjusted and removed.
