The 1955 Doubled Die is one of the most interesting and most famous US coins. It is definitely the single most famous doubled die coin. The doubling occurred when a hub die and working die struck one another slightly off. The doubling is very noticeable, to even the naked eye. Many of these wound up in Cigarette packs as 2-cents of change after a customer would put a quarter into a machine for a 23-cent pack of smokes.
